EFFECT OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

EFFECT OF WOMEN EMPOWERMENT

The project looks at women empowerment and sustainable development, through the means of active involvement in a community. This study is aimed at exploring the lack of women’s active contribution in the community and active participation in an event that is geared to contribute to the socioeconomic life of their community.

The project explores the placement/location of women in Ghuata community. During the Ghauta Day Festival of Kagoma people in Kaduna State, Nigeria, the men are the ones who perform active and sensitive roles, the women who make up the full community are more or less inactive, and this in a way affects the development, growth and increase of the community. Active involvement is paramount. For example, it enables planners, researchers and community leaders as a whole when identifying and formulating development programmes, to consult with both men and women in order to take into account their needs, attitudes and traditional knowledge. Only with active participation will the society beneficiaries become the principal actors to make development successful and attainable. The assumption is that empowering women, allowing them free involvement, communication and information can go a long way in reducing poverty, dependency and planning at the family and community level towards improving life. The need to change poor standards of living among the people of Kagoma and stimulate them to contribute effectively to the society by means of using the available resources in the community through their active participation in development is a key factor for organizing the Ghauta Day Festival. The cultural performances of most societies is usually used as a process of attracting participation in development, because large group of people with diverse talents and initiatives usually take part in the performance and by means of their contributions during the performance brings about increased knowledge, skills and development as new innovations and ideas are usually presented during cultural performances. The attempt of this project is to use the rich natural resources in the community such as the festival, which its aim is to bring about growth and knowledge to the people. The empowerment of women is also seen as a pre-requisite for achieving effective and people centered development. Gender considerations have in recent times become an issue for debate in different society. This is because of the realization of the need to bridge the social gap between men and women in the process of achieving social transformation and development. In many developing countries, Nigeria inclusive, Women, especially at the community levels are neglected and marginalized in the decision making processes, vital communication, and getting effective information. They are more vulnerable to poverty and have limited options than men to escape poverty, partly because they are regarded as inferior; they have less acquired skills and less to say in the community than their male counterpart. Therefore, there is an increase in the call for women to partake fully in economic, cultural, political and social activities to bring about advancement in their communities. It is against this background that this project explores a cultural festival as an avenue to empower women in the process of harnessing the rich resources in the Kagoma community, of Kaduna State, Nigeria.
